with Reedbeds

Mine water flows have been effectively filtered by Reedbeds for many years. There are many different types of mine water flows. Some are full of iron, others have aluminium and nickel. In most cases the emergence of the water flows to the air and oxygen, the metals oxidise and drop out as solids in the form of sludges. These sludges can be collected in pre-reedbed lagoons. In some instances carbonates are added to lagoons situated between the reedbeds. What minerals are not dropped out by the oxygen, can be collected as carbonates in these lagoons.
The two stage reedbed systems can reduce minerals and metals by huge amounts. Fe reductions in Greens Clough were from 180.5mg/L down to 0.24mg/L, this is a 99.8% reduction. Outflow figures are at "8" and "9". Site 10 is in the stream, up from where these discharges occurred.

Coal Spoil Re-Vegetation Coal Spoil Re-vegetation has historically used B horizon soils,
or it has simply tried planting trees directly into the acidic, compacted, spoils, leading in both cases very poor results.
