Do It Yourself Slip Resistant Glass Granules
We found that recycled glass granules of a certain size, offers a slip resistant surface to both pavements and wooden walk ways. The idea of glass granules may conjure up thoughts of cuts and bleeding, but at these sizes and shapes you can wiggle your hand in a bucket of these granules and not come to any harm. Obviously these materials need to be used only as described.
We found that by using a clear glue " sticks like sh**t" we have a long lasting, hard wearing, gritty surface. We have put these surfaces that our workmen use many times, every workday. After 6 months of a trial, the surface remains gritty, providing confidence in wet and slippy conditions.
You can get tubes of this glue from many hardware retailers. Once we found this glue did the job, we stopped looking for other makes and types. There may be alternative glues, but we are not aware of them.
A 2kg bag of Glass Granules, plus a tube of glue will cover a significant area, when applied as described below.
What you need Gloves protective glasses work wear cloths for application
1 Tube "Sticks like Sh*t" Glue Brush for spreading the glue
2kg bag of Glass Granules Roller to press granules into the glue
Brush and Pan to sweep up excess granules
Applying to Pavements
Sweep
the area clean
Apply the glue, providing a nice thick
covering
Apply the glue to all the surfaces Sprinkle the glue onto the area and Apply Granules to all surfaces
you plan to apply the glass to. using the roller, press
the granules into the glue.
I have always used generous quantities of granules. For this reason I've had to sweep up the excess granules. In this way, I've swept up perhaps 30% of the amount of granules I originally applied.
Applying to Wooden Walkway
Here we have a wooden dipping platform. When wet, these surfaces can be lethal. We were given permission to apply the granulated surface. This was our opportunity to test how hard wearing these surfaces are. We only had 3kgs of the granules. With 1kg more, we could have completed the area. As it is, this area took myself and Arron, just 1 hour to apply, and sweep up.
Summary
I know that you can make a tidier job of applying the granules than I have. The shape was what I had imagined. You may imagine far prettier areas for the granule application.
The surface provided by the granules is gritty. So it is possible to suffer from grazing of the skin, as with all gritty surfaces.
The one advantage we see, is the confidence of being able to walk on a slip resistant surface, in wet conditions.
Ideally, these surfaces should reduce the problems of slips and falls, particularly for vulnerable people.
A 2kg bag of Glass Granules, costing £7.50 plus the cost of the glue, could reduce a significant number of injuries from slips and falls.
